Pilot Review "Bones" (FOX)
Premise: When law enforcement calls upon Dr. Temperance Brennan and her team of scientists to assist with murder investigations, she often finds herself teamed up with Special Agent Seeley Booth a former Army Ranger whose mistrust of science and scientists leads them to clash both professionally and personally, making them the perfect choice to solve the toughest cases together.
Starring: Emily Deschanel, David Boreanaz, Jonathan Adams, TJ Thyne, Eric Millegan, Michaela Conlin, John M. Jackson
Review:
This is FOX's version of a forensic drama with a few funny lines. Sadly, this "Crossing Jordan" wannabe series doesn't deliver. (Thanks
hannibalsmith for the CJ comparison.)
Setting aside the fact that every time you see Boreanaz on screen you wait for him to become Angelus is not an easy task. Add to that the fact that when you see John M. Jackson in scenes, you keep asking yourself "He left JAG to tackle on other roles and he chooses this? A perfect copy of Admiral Chegwidden?!?!" I tried to bursh off both thoughts as far as I could when watching "Bones" and be open-minded as it is the type of series I usually enjoy.
Sadly, the way-too-predictable and seen-in-so-many-movies-and-tv-series storyline and the lack of chemistry amongst the team doesn't help "Bones" case. The writers surely tried their best to include smartass lines but didn't succeed enough for my taste. During the scenes inside a car, you can clearly see the poor editing... it's obvious the actors where in front of a blue screen. The soundtrack is good. The songs are coming directly from "Dawson's Creek" episodes and the instrumental pieces help add a soopky and tense feeling to the episode.
The character played by Conlin got on my nerve the second she hit the screen and that feeling remained until the end of the episode. I cannot pinpoint why but her attitude just doesn't appeal to me. Thankfully, the characters played by Deschanel and Boreanaz have good background and have the love-hate chemistry needed. Other than those two, none of the characters appealed to me, not even John M. Jackson's character (I liked the actor when in JAG).
"Bones" will not be one of the series on my must-watch list this coming Fall. However, David Boreanaz fans should check it out but not become too attached to the series... Need I remind you that it's on FOX?
"Bones" will debut on Tuesday, September 13 at 8 p.m. on FOX.

*If* the writing improves, and if Fox doesn't act like Fox, it might survive.

Remember that this was written based on seeing only the pilot. Know that I'm a HUGE "Bones" fan as I gave the show a 2nd chance when it premiered since I am a Boreanaz fan and followed him ;)
