Lost - Foxy Giggles

Pilot Review "Bones" (FOX)

Premise: When law enforcement calls upon Dr. Temperance Brennan and her team of scientists to assist with murder investigations, she often finds herself teamed up with Special Agent Seeley Booth a former Army Ranger whose mistrust of science and scientists leads them to clash both professionally and personally, making them the perfect choice to solve the toughest cases together.

Starring: Emily Deschanel, David Boreanaz, Jonathan Adams, TJ Thyne, Eric Millegan, Michaela Conlin, John M. Jackson

Review:

This is FOX's version of a forensic drama with a few funny lines. Sadly, this "Crossing Jordan" wannabe series doesn't deliver. (Thanks [info]hannibalsmith for the CJ comparison.)

Setting aside the fact that every time you see Boreanaz on screen you wait for him to become Angelus is not an easy task. Add to that the fact that when you see John M. Jackson in scenes, you keep asking yourself "He left JAG to tackle on other roles and he chooses this? A perfect copy of Admiral Chegwidden?!?!" I tried to bursh off both thoughts as far as I could when watching "Bones" and be open-minded as it is the type of series I usually enjoy.

Sadly, the way-too-predictable and seen-in-so-many-movies-and-tv-series storyline and the lack of chemistry amongst the team doesn't help "Bones" case. The writers surely tried their best to include smartass lines but didn't succeed enough for my taste. During the scenes inside a car, you can clearly see the poor editing... it's obvious the actors where in front of a blue screen. The soundtrack is good. The songs are coming directly from "Dawson's Creek" episodes and the instrumental pieces help add a soopky and tense feeling to the episode.

The character played by Conlin got on my nerve the second she hit the screen and that feeling remained until the end of the episode. I cannot pinpoint why but her attitude just doesn't appeal to me. Thankfully, the characters played by Deschanel and Boreanaz have good background and have the love-hate chemistry needed. Other than those two, none of the characters appealed to me, not even John M. Jackson's character (I liked the actor when in JAG).

"Bones" will not be one of the series on my must-watch list this coming Fall. However, David Boreanaz fans should check it out but not become too attached to the series... Need I remind you that it's on FOX?

"Bones" will debut on Tuesday, September 13 at 8 p.m. on FOX.

This was one of the shows I was excited about because it is based on the Kathy Reichs books and she is one of my favorite authors. That totally sucks but I can see that just by your description they have ruined the whole set up of characters too. Uggh doubt I will be watching now. Thanks for the review.
I didn't like it. However, Jort liked it (read his review HERE). You can see that even us two don't agree. So give it a try when it premieres, maybe you'll like it.
I found the writing to be clunky and the anvils to be WAY overdone - how many times do we need to know that Deschanel's character is disconnected?

*If* the writing improves, and if Fox doesn't act like Fox, it might survive.

ok that was harsh to all of us bones fans out there...i dont know if you were mocking all the david boreanaz fans saying they'll follow him anywhere he is acting, but that is so not true...he is only one of the people that makes this show a success...there are several others...i love conlin's character...she is very outgoing and funny...you have to sort of warm up to her and brennan of course you have to warm up to...i loved all the character developments personally and the acting was terrific...the jokes were hysterical and it was more than a drama...it is like csi to me...not all of the eps are predictable...i know in most of the eps within the thirty minute period we take guesses and then we found out later that it was someone else...maybe you have just seen so many crime shows and they all are predictable now to you so that will happen with all new crime shows...for me, personally, i am learning as the show goes on...lately, i have been able to tell who the murderer was as well, well into the second season, and do that by the clues...but not all of them are predictable...it is a good fun-loving series...and it is a success...not because of american idol or its time slot...it is a success in itself...and i personally am eagerly anticipating the third season to see what happens next...like i say to everyone i try to encourage to watch bones...you either will like it or you will hate it...just like me and house...i don't like that show...maybe you feel the same about bones...and what do you mean about fox being fox?
Hello!

Remember that this was written based on seeing only the pilot. Know that I'm a HUGE "Bones" fan as I gave the show a 2nd chance when it premiered since I am a Boreanaz fan and followed him ;)
